OpenClaw Skill Generator (SKILL.md)

Generate a SKILL.md for an OpenClaw skill from structured fields: purpose, triggers, steps, tools and examples, with valid frontmatter, gating (bins, env, config, os) and name and description checks.

Workspace

How the result is calculated

The file is built per the OpenClaw docs: a YAML frontmatter with name (lowercase Latin letters, digits and hyphens) and description, optionally user-invocable, disable-model-invocation and a one-line JSON metadata holding openclaw with requires (bins, anyBins, env, config), os, primaryEnv and always. Then a Markdown body: purpose, when to use, numbered steps, tools and examples. The description is quoted automatically if it holds YAML-special characters. The name (pattern, length, no consecutive hyphens), the description (present, ≤ 1024) and executable and environment variable names are checked.

Limits: It does not guarantee the skill will work well: instruction quality depends on your wording and the skill is not tested inside OpenClaw. The length limits (64/1024) come from the AgentSkills spec as I know it and were not verified; the docs only mention the name pattern. OpenClaw tool names are not checked for existence. Gating is written as you enter it without checking the files on your machine. Test the skill with openclaw skills check after placing it.

FAQ

Where do I put the file?

In ~/.openclaw/workspace/skills//SKILL.md (or a subfolder), then run openclaw skills check.

What is the difference between bins and anyBins?

bins: all must be on PATH; anyBins: at least one is enough.
