(Preheader)

The subject line is the first thing a recipient sees and often the only one. There is no magic formula, but there are principles that reduce mistakes and make testing systematic.
1. Say what is in the message, honestly
A clear subject that matches the content builds trust. A misleading one (such as faking a reply with “RE:” or promising an offer that is not there) conflicts with laws like CAN-SPAM, which prohibits deceptive headers and subject lines, and raises complaints and harms reputation.
2. Put the key idea in the first 30–40 characters
Mobile apps truncate the subject at a width that is typically somewhere around 30 to 40 characters (it varies by app and font). Lead with the benefit or main topic, and keep the total to roughly 30–60 characters unless there is a good reason.
3. Be specific
“October sales report is ready” beats “Important information”. Real numbers, names and dates let the recipient judge the message.
4. Personalise carefully
Merge tags (such as a first name) can help, but a fallback value is essential so “Hi ,” or the raw tag does not go out. Do not rely on the name alone; relevance to the content matters more.
5. Avoid manufactured urgency
- Fully capitalised words, repeated exclamation marks (
!!!) and phrases such as “win now” or “100% free” have historically been associated with spam; they are one small factor in modern filters, which lean more on reputation, authentication and engagement. - Emoji are not forbidden; use them sparingly, to suit your audience, and test.
6. Write together with the preheader
The preheader appears next to the subject in many clients. Make it complement the subject, not repeat it; otherwise the client shows the start of the message (which may be links or “view in browser”).
7. Arabic and text direction
When mixing Arabic with English or numbers, the display order can change depending on the app's direction; try the subject in different mail clients and on mobile. Place punctuation and emoji so they do not flip in right-to-left display.
8. Do not assume: test
What works for one audience may fail for another. Compare two versions with a single variable, measure clicks or conversions rather than opens alone (opens are inflated by privacy protection), and fix the sample size beforehand. See the A/B testing guide.
